love allen but i always felt sorry for his sidekick
"Martian Bossa Nova" is my favorite jazz track ever, and this version sounds generally terrific.
The were made one by the other...its good to see people loving each other this way!
Just found this, thank you so much, one of my favourite big bands!
Our pleasure!
One of the finest singers of the 20th century
What an incredible talent! Miss him!
Who's playing through who's solo? 😀
They were short on time for their spot!
I watched this at age 14 in 1980 and remember thinking "I cant believe anyone could make Steve Martin seem unfunny." But this shtick just didnt make me laugh. I guess i shouldve been around in the 50s to appreciate it more
George Kennedy 🤣😂
This is a great show Steve!
"Time Being" should have been picked in the Bill Holman repertory. I heard the Buddy Rich Big Band version of that in that 1971 recording. Very difficult big band number. It seems like this should be "the John Coltrane's "Giant Steps" of big band music selections." It is difficult to play or perform but I like listening to it.
Everybody playing their lights out! Here's to Willis. Hope he had a few forgotten arrangements stuck in drawers somewhere. Even his everyday stuff was way better than most what gets recorded!
What a total legend, memeory of a elephant and sharp as a tack.. Brilliant musician and human being x
I miss those tv days
Just bought myself a bunch of albums CDs by The two terrys and then bought milt Jackson’s “plenty. plenty soul “to round off my interest in vibes
Wonderful...
We lived in Burbank for many years and were fortunate to witness history. It was early TV, live and Steve Allen was famous in Hollywood to seek out serious talent. While the show seemed a little silly and goofy at times, don't be fooled folks. Musicians and guests were real pros and most of them built careers well into the future. These videos bring back sweet memories of a bygone era. Thanks for the great post!
You are very welcome!
One of the finest singers I've heard. How about Kral Space? Pure Music. No tricks, no schtick, no ego, pure music. I love Irene Kral.
Great show. Remember Steve Allen wrote many songs too. Great all around entertainer. RIP Steve and Jayne.
Dig these rippin tunes by Terry Gibbs and was just thinking man, that piano play is killing it too.
Steve allen!!!!!!!
Two of the all-time best withouta doubt...head and shoulder above anything that purports to be talent in the (c)rap era of noise...this is real music the way GOD meant it to be. The nicest thing I can say is a quote from Old Blue Eyes, the Chairman of the Board, Francis Albert Sinatra. When asked "What is it like to be the greatest singer of all time?" Sinatra said "I wouldn't know, you'd have to ask Steve Lawrence."
Absolutely Peter!
Tears. At the beauty of this and the loss of Irene Kral.
Chauncy Welsch was a very musical soloist. He played a great solo on "Soaring."
Bill Maher's huge talent shines brightly already here.
I think Paul Williams is on drugs here, because his performance is so disconnected from the reality of actually singing his song. His diction is totally slurred.
Man, these were great to watch ... Thank You !
You are very welcome!
Doc was channeling Chuck Maggione there a bit
Thanks for recording this! I was there!
Our pleasure!
Fantastic, thanks so much for your channel!
You are very welcome!
Nice Carl Fontana trombone solo
Here's the deal. The "satire" of "Hot Stuff" at 37:32 is so obtuse. He doesn't realize how something like Def Comedy Jam could easily do a similar take down of "This Could Be the Start of Something Big." "You lunchin' at 21 an' watchin' yo diet. Declinin' a Charlotte Russe, acceptin' a fig!" No room for any superiority complex at all. I used to like Steve Allen, but his pomposity really gradually turned me off.
Yes. You're absolutely correct. I watched this at age 14 when it aired & remember this! I thought, He really doesn't get that it's not about the lyrics but the MUSIC. Of course, I could almost be like him TODAY dissecting some current music lyrics 😂
Plas Johnson - genius saxophonist. 92 yrs old as of this post.
This is GREAT
Ann Jillian would return as Cassie on It's a Living a couple of years after this aired.
Let me see if I can fill in the tech staff cracks in the show: Stage Managers CRAIG FACTOR, ANDREW KANTOLA Unit Manager DAVID AMICO Technical Director DARELL KUENZLER Lighting Director JIM RATCLIFFE Audio KEN BECKER Video BOB SPEARS Cameras HARVEY CLAVON, GREG COOK, DAVE HECKMAN, BRUCE OLDHAM, GEORGE WOOD Costume Designer RET TURNER Make-Up LISA PHARREN Hair Stylist SHANNON ELY
The sound engineer (unlike the camera operator apparently) actually knows that a bass trombone exists in a big band. Very nice.
The camera operator knows full well of the bass trombone's existence. Unfortunately, musicians who hide their faces behind overly high music stands don't care about cameras. (With all due respect to the fine Paul Nelson.)
Some of the greats in the music business, love them all & miss this kind of music now days
What a great show this was. Thanks for posting this
You are very welcome!
Like a list of all the players!
Trumpets: Bob Summers Frank Szabo Carl Saunders Ron Stout Trombones: Bob Enevoldsen Charlie Loper Mike Barone Saxophones: Terry Harrington Bob Efford Med Flory Lanny Morgan Jack Nimitz Tom Ranier - piano Dave Carpenter - bass Jeff Hamilton - drums Ken Peplowski - guest clarinet Terry Gibbs - leader & vibes MC: Chuck Niles
I read an obituary of Bob Florence which compared him to Duke Ellington. Not an overstatement.
Bill Holman is no longer with us too... RIP Carl Saunders аnd Bill Holman.
The Best!!!! I believe the Trumpet section on these is: Al Porcino, Ray Triscari, Conte Candoli, Stu Williamson!!! Thanks for posting The Dream Band!!!
all these show bring back such good memories.
Yes,,,,nothing better than these
Featured guest here, Dizzy Gillespie, is quoted in the Ken Burns Documentary as saying that earlier Jazz was good for its time but those were childish times, Does anyone know exactly what he meant?
Yes time go fast2023 24
I was SO fortunate to have seen them multiple times at Westbury music fair. They were magnificent, their orchestra was outstanding, their rapport on stage, the schticloch, the jokes and banter between them, came as a result of talent, hard work and a lifetime of dedication. Nevermore.
Bill Mahr wasn’t funny back then either . . . .
So Bill Maher was the announcer and comedian!
I love this, but I have to say and all honesty that’s Steve Allen could really be a jerk sometimes! He didn’t know to pull it in!
